Cuba first tested mobile phone Internet 5 million users free experience for 8 hours

Original title: Cuba's first national test mobile Internet access, 5 million users free experience for 8 hours

The Cuban government said recently that it provided an 8-hour free mobile Internet service to more than 5 million mobile phone users nationwide on Tuesday (14th). This is a test conducted by Cuba before the official opening of the mobile Internet service nationwide.

According to Reuters, Cuba is one of the countries with the lowest Internet penetration in the Western Hemisphere. The Cuban Telecommunications Corporation (ETECSA) announced that the Internet test on Tuesday marked the country's first official mobile Internet service.

According to reports, almost no homes in Cuba have Internet connections, and there are only a few hundred WiFi hotspots in the country. The famous Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez is considered to be the social media pioneer in the country. Recently, Yoani Sanchez said in Twitter that "this time the national mobile Internet service test is a victory for all Cuban citizens."

In the streets of Havana, the capital of Cuba, although some mobile users said that the speed of the Internet was significantly lower than usual, they were happy with the 8 hours of free Internet access.

Taxi driver Andres Peraza told reporters excitedly: "This is an amazing day. We finally don't need to connect to specific outlets to communicate with our foreign families. We can always contact us. ."

It is reported that about 40% of Cubans currently have relatives overseas and need to communicate daily through the Internet.

Leinier Valdez, one of the testers, said happily: "It is great to be able to access the Internet for free. I believe it will get better and better in the future."

Currently, Cuba’s Internet access via WiFi is about $1 per hour, while Cubans’ average monthly salary is only $30. The Cuban government has not yet announced the price of mobile Internet access in the future and when it will be officially opened. But Cuban telecommunications companies have sent bills to major companies and embassies, which will cost $45 a month.

Due to lack of funds and other reasons, Cuba is far behind most countries in terms of Internet construction. As of 2013, the Internet was basically open to the public only on hotels on the island. But now the government has put the Internet construction on the agenda, will introduce Internet cafes and outdoor wireless LAN connections, and will slowly begin to open home network services.

As early as the Cuban leader Carnell took office in April this year, he has always supported Cuba's Internet construction. "We can combine the things we promote and the network very well, and we should also eliminate the mediocre and vulgar content on the Internet."
