Communication: Next year is a hundred years of commemoration, but we may have to close the door - the worries of the American dairy farmers family

News Agency, Washington, August 5th News : Next year is a hundred years of commemoration, but we may have to close the door - the worries of the American dairy farmers family

"Six months ago, we told ourselves to stay for another six months," said Sarah Lloyd, a dairy farmer in Wisconsin, USA. "It’s ok today... If you still can’t see it in the future, I don’t think there will be milking cows here next year.”

Next year, it is this dairy farm that has been painstakingly managed by three generations for a hundred years.

The dairy farm is located in the Midwestern state of Wisconsin, a large dairy state in the United States. It was founded by Sarah’s husband, Nelson’s grandfather, and is now the third generation. The couple worked with Nelson's parents and brothers.

The US's trade war against many countries has been countered, and the US dairy industry, which is increasingly dependent on exports, has been the first to bear the brunt. Although this dairy farm does not have direct sales overseas, it is affected by the upstream of the industry and the prospects are worrying.

The reporter recently visited the dairy farm to see Sarah. "Now we are in a period of terrible trade wars," said Sarah, 46. "I really don't know what will happen later."

The dairy farm was once the hope of the family. In 2002, due to the optimistic development of the dairy industry, the Nelson family loaned to the bank and expanded its business scale. The number of cows in the dairy farm increased from 125 to 250, and then increased to 350 today. At the same time, the cowshed was newly built and many agricultural machinery and equipment were added.

“Things are going very well, it’s getting harder and harder to make money,” Nelson, 53 years old, complained to reporters. “In the past few years, our costs have continued to increase and our profit margins have become smaller and smaller.”

In the past ten years, the days of American dairy farmers have not been better. Affected by continued growth in production and shrinking domestic markets, US milk prices have been sluggish for several years after a high price of $25/100 pounds in 2014. According to the US Department of Agriculture data, milk prices have rebounded to $19/100 pounds in early 2017, but since the beginning of the year, both current prices and futures have fallen sharply.
