Eight people died in the sinking of immigrant ships in western Turkey

The Turkish Coast Guard said on the 10th that the sinking of illegal immigrant ships in the Aegean Sea in the western part of the country has killed 8 people and 25 people missing.

The Turkish Coast Guard issued a statement on its official website saying that the bodies of the six victims were washed ashore and the bodies of the two victims were found at sea. Rescue workers are still searching for 25 missing persons.

According to Turkish media reports, the ship carrying illegal immigrants may seek to travel to Greece but sank in the waters around the Calabrun region of Izmir, Turkey. The media reported earlier that the shipwreck caused at least four deaths and 30 missing, and the Coast Guard rescued a woman.

The statement said that the woman who was rescued was an Iraqi and she relied on life jackets to survive.

The Aegean Sea is an important channel for illegal immigrants to sneak into the European continent via Turkey. In March 2016, Turkey and the EU reached an agreement on refugee issues. The earth authorities strengthened their control and the number of people smuggled by the Aegean Sea decreased significantly. But this year, the number of people seeking to sneak into Europe through the Aegean Sea has risen again. According to the latest data from the Turkish Coast Guard, the Turkish side has intercepted 20,688 people this year, 4,640 more than the same period last year.

Data show that since July this year, about 30 illegal immigrants have lost their lives in the Aegean Sea in western Turkey.
