Australia prohibits overseas students from internships in the parliament, to prevent China?

[Global Times Comprehensive Report] According to the Australian Financial Review on the 12th, the Australian Parliament has banned overseas students from internships in the Federal Council of Representatives. The newspaper said that this is because members are worried that Chinese students will have access to confidential materials.

According to the new decree, internships organized by the Australian National University will be limited to Australian citizens, although federal parliamentarians can still provide internships or job opportunities to foreigners on an informal basis.

Reuters said the reform is clearly "preventing Chinese from spying on Australian affairs." The proportion of Chinese students applying to the Australian Parliament and the government for internship is very high. Some people even work as interns in the Parliament or the government for many years. Interns can enter the offices of federal parliamentarians and participate in a series of activities that affect national policy making. Some Australians have told the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives that they are worried that Chinese students will use this privilege to gain access to parliamentarians and ministers' offices.

A spokesman for the Australian Senate Speaker Ryan refused to answer the direct reason for this policy change. For Reuters reporters asking "whether the purpose of this move is to prevent Chinese intervention," he declined to comment.
